New To Fishing? Fishing has been passed down from generation to generation, and many things along the way have changed. Maybe you know how to fish and maybe you don't. We want to help guide you on how to get started with as little investment as possible while increasing your chance of going home with fish. So hear us out, we know you'll like what you find. So getting started is a lot easier than you might think, so easy that you could be fishing in a hour from now. This is our started package, we don't sell it but this is what you need to start. 1) Fishing license, $25 annual license- Obtainable at Sportsman's Warehouse, Wal-Mart, Fred Meyer's, GI Joes, and many other local locations. 2) You need a fishing pole. You can purchase a combo rod and reel starting at about $10 from most of the retailers listed above. We believe in supporting smaller shops but for some items it makes more sense to go to the big box. 3) Your going to need some tackle. A great beginner fish is Trout because of the volume in which Oregon stocks them and the resources we offer for them so we are going to direct your tackle towards trout. For starters your rod and reel (fishing pole) probably came lined for you, this will work just fine for starting out. Your also going to want a pack of treble hooks size 12 is a good start, $2-$4. You may also want a pack of regular hooks, I don't like them but for baits like worms you will need them. Again size 12 is great and you can find them starting at about $1. Your going to want a small roll of fishing line for leader lines, I like size 6 and you can get a large roll for about $4. I use dark green but many people will argue different colors so really the choice is yours. Your going to want a package of sinker weights also, these look like a small egg with a hole running through it. The best size for starting out is 1/4oz. After your first trip you may decide bigger or smaller is the way to go. You can get a package of 4-5 starting at about $1. Your also going to want some swivels with a quick release latch. Smaller is better for trout and they start at less than $1. Next your going to need some bait. I've had great luck with power bait. I prefer the extra scent dark green with sparkles, about $4. Last your going to want some Kastmaster lures. You can read all about them on our message board but you recommend 1/4oz. They cost about $3 each and I keep 3 different colors with me at all times. Now you might add more items to your list as you go along, one thing you can do is read our boards and see what's working. So now that your have what we have recommended your probably wondering how to use it. Let's break it down for you and get you on your way to the first bite of the year. Now if you bore easy lures are going to be your best friend. You can cover a lot of water and a small amount of time and you'll really feel like your making ground even when nothings biting. So all you need to do to use a lure is pull your main line out and tie a swivel on with a quick release latch. Grab a kastmaster and hook it onto your swivel. No modifications or weights needed, just hook it on, cast it, and reel it in nice and slow. Keep the tip of your pole pointed at the water to help your lure swim straight and hold on. You can tie your line directly to the lure but if you don't have a swivel you might get some kinks in the line as your lure attempts to spin and twists your line. With a swivel it can move freely and with a latch you are able to switch to another lure in just a few seconds. Okay now we are down to bottom fishing. Notice I haven't mention top fishing with a bobber, well truth is I don't like it. If I'm fishing the top I'm using a lure every time. Bottom fishing is easy and can pull in some great fish fast. Bottom fishing has a lot less worries like snags and seaweed but your can't cover as much water, you have to be patient. So grab your line that your purchased for a leader line. Cut yourself a 2-3 foot piece and tie a treble hook on one side and a normal swivel on the other, you can use a swivel with a latch but you don't need to. Now take your main line and run it through a sinker weight. Tie on a swivel that has a latch. This will keep your weight away from your bait. Now attach you leader by sliding your normal swivel from you leader onto the latch of the swivel on your main line. As you notice your weight is away from your hook. Now when this is cast our your bait will float up and your weight will sink hiding your tackle from the fish but putting your bait in a great spot to get grabbed up. There are a lot of benefits to using this method. You can make your leader longer or shorter as you desire and you can also give your main line slack allowing your bait to float higher. Last you need to bait your hook. Notice I said treble hook, you can use a regular hook but a treble hook will hold most baits better. Grab yourself some power bait and make a ball around your treble hook, I use just enough to hide all of the metal. I want to take a second to add a few pointers to help you out. For starters check out our trout stocking schedule and try to fish a pond the weekend that it was stocked or the following week. I Prefer to wait until Tuesday or Wednesday the week after the week of stocking. Next, when using a lure you will feel the fish take it from you, when the fish pulls make sure to set the hook by giving your rod a strong pull away from the fish towards yourself before you start reeling it in. I tend to keep my pole even to the water as a pull it to set the hook but many people pull it straight up, either is fine. When bottom fishing stay patient, you're likely to feel the fish hit your bait a few times before it takes it. Wait for the fish to pull your pole before setting the hook. You'll know when the fish is on when your pole stops bouncing in short jumps but rather it will pull quick and hard. That's it, now this is my advice but I think you should read anything you can and find what works for you by trying different things. Feel free to post questions on our message boards anytime, I'm sure you'll get a lot of answers and different opinion to your question. |
